Volunteer Spotlight: Xaviera Ogilvie
At just 13 years old, Xaviera is already making a big impression at Parkgate Society. A former participant in Camp Adventurers, art programs, and after-school care, she’s now giving back as a volunteer—bringing energy, empathy, and encouragement to every program.
“I grew up in Parkgate programs,” she says. “So it’s not new to me. I wanted to give back and have fun with the kids—just like the leaders and volunteers I looked up to when I was younger.”
Now volunteering in both camps and the climbing wall program, Xaviera’s favourite moments come from watching kids push themselves and celebrate their wins. One memory that stands out was watching a nervous camper reach the top of the climbing wall for the first time. “We were all cheering her on,” she recalls. “When she made it, we gave her high fives and made sure she felt proud. Now she climbs to the top all the time!”
While she expected fun, what surprised Xaviera most was how much responsibility came with the role. “I thought it would be more relaxed, but the leaders really rely on us,” she says. “It’s not overwhelming—it actually feels good to be needed.”
That sense of purpose has shaped her in meaningful ways. Personally, she feels more connected to her community. Professionally, she’s gained leadership experience and new opportunities at school. “Volunteering helped me become more confident and made me think about working with kids as a future career.”
She credits former camp leader Angela as one of her biggest influences. “Angela always had a positive attitude and made everyone feel included. I still remember how she made people feel—and I want to be like that too.”
Xaviera describes her experience in three words: adventurous, fun, and welcoming. Whether exploring Science World with a group of campers or encouraging a child to conquer a climbing wall, she brings that spirit to every session.
Looking ahead, she hopes to continue volunteering in the summer—and one day become a camp leader herself. With her thoughtful approach and natural warmth, that goal is well within reach.
