Volunteer Spotlight: Sean Slinn
For Sean, volunteering at Parkgate Society isn’t just about giving back, it’s about coming full circle. Once a participant in Parkgate’s school-age care and summer camp programs, he’s now the one helping shape those same experiences for the next generation.
“I was looking for something more to do in the summer, and I remembered how great the camps were when I was younger,” he says. “I liked interacting with the volunteers back then, so I figured it would be cool to be one myself.”
Now a high school student and avid lover of the outdoors, Sean brings his natural energy and positivity into every program he supports. Whether he’s out exploring with campers or helping younger kids settle into school-age care, his approach is grounded in kindness and understanding.
One of his standout memories? Helping a young camper who was struggling to make friends. “We started playing Uno together, and after a few days I helped introduce him to other kids. That small connection really brought the whole camp group together.”
Sean has also been surprised by how meaningful the relationships among volunteers can be. “I’ve made friends with other volunteers, people I didn’t know well before, even though we go to the same school. That was unexpected, but awesome.”
When asked what he’s learned, Sean points to patience, something that’s grown through experience and carried over into his personal life. “Working with kids teaches you to slow down, listen, and handle things calmly,” he explains. “It’s helped me in more ways than I thought.”
He also credits staff members like Debbie (supervisor of Parkgate School Age Care), who supported him when he was in child care and now supports him as a volunteer. “She’s always been really kind and encouraging; it’s great to have someone like that in your corner.”
Describing his time at Parkgate in three words, Sean chooses community, fun, and joyful.
Looking ahead, Sean hopes to keep volunteering and maybe even land a job with Parkgate one day. “It would be a great summer job. I already know the programs, and it’s something I really enjoy.”
From camper to volunteer and maybe future staff, Sean’s journey is a great example of what community is all about.
