Volunteer Spotlight: Jaimee Dominique Garcia
Jaimee is a student at Seycove Secondary who has found more than just a way to earn hours through volunteering; she’s found connection, confidence, and a sense of belonging at Parkgate Society.
Originally from the Philippines, Jaimee moved to Canada with her family just a few years ago. “When we got here, one of the first things I noticed was how much Canadians volunteer,” she says. “My friends were doing it, and I wanted to try too.”
Jaimee volunteers primarily in Parkgate’s arts programs, including spring break art camps, where she’s had some memorable experiences. One moment that stood out was helping a young camper with separation anxiety. “By the end of the week, she hugged me goodbye. That was really sweet,” she recalls. “I had the same anxiety when I was younger, so I understood how she felt.”
Volunteering has surprised Jaimee in more ways than one. She didn’t expect the kids to be so energetic after school or that she’d enjoy the work so much. “It’s just a different vibe. At school, it’s stressful, but here it’s fun and relaxed. You don’t even realize the time passing by.”
The experience has helped her grow personally, too. “I’ve become more understanding, more vocal, and more mature,” she says. “Working with kids has helped me a lot.” She also credits Parkgate’s staff, especially Liya (Volunteer Coordinator) and Kathy (Art Instructor), for being supportive, flexible, and kind.
When asked to describe her experience in three words, Jaimee chose: rewarding, fulfilling, and relaxing. That last one might be unexpected, but she explains, “With art, it doesn’t have to be perfect. You can just enjoy it and be in the moment.”
Looking ahead, Jaimee plans to continue volunteering this summer, hoping to take on more shifts and explore more programs, including getting back into day camps. “I’ve been to all sorts of places I’d never seen before, like Science World and Crash Crawly’s. Because of Parkgate, I felt like a kid again.”
Jaimee continues to be a valued presence in the arts programs and a true role model for aspiring volunteers.
