Parkgate Society Scholarships

Parkgate Society is proud to support local students who demonstrate exceptional dedication to their community. Our scholarships recognize individuals who have shown outstanding volunteerism, leadership, and commitment to making a positive impact. Below are the two scholarships available for 2025:

 

Student Volunteer Scholarship – $1,000

This scholarship is awarded to a graduating secondary school student who has demonstrated a strong commitment to volunteering with Parkgate Society programs and activities. In addition to their service, recipients should showcase strong character, leadership, and scholastic achievement. The scholarship funds are directed toward tuition at a Canadian post-secondary institution. Applications are due by May 1, 2025.

Community Spirit Scholarship – $500

Open to residents of North Vancouver, this scholarship recognizes individuals who have contributed to community programs that help others “live life better.” Applicants should display leadership, good character, and scholastic achievement. The scholarship funds are directed toward tuition at a Canadian post-secondary institution. Applications are due by May 1, 2025.

Marika Brydon
2024 Student Volunteer Scholarship

Throughout her high school years, Marika balanced academic excellence with extensive volunteer work, contributing over 100 hours to Parkgate Society alone. She played a pivotal role in supporting events like the All Ages Drag Brunch and Preteen Dances, showcasing her leadership and commitment to her community. Marika’s passion for education and mentorship is evident in her work as a peer tutor and Ambassadors Club executive. Her commitment to making a positive impact earned her the North Vancouver Civic Youth Award. Marika’s journey showcases the power of giving back, and we wish her the best at Simon Fraser University and beyond!

2025 Update from Marika: “I’m enjoying my time at SFU and having an amazing experience learning in my science classes and the Faculty of Education. I’ve loved getting to know the incredible community at SFU by joining clubs and online groups. I look forward to many more years of studying biology ahead!”


Melissa Matthews
2024 Community Spirit Scholarship Recipient

Melissa Matthews is the kind of person who makes a difference wherever she goes. With a heart for helping others, she has dedicated many hours to volunteering at Parkgate Society’s dementia program, bringing joy to seniors through music, exercise, and conversation. Whether it’s shadowing a physiotherapist, mentoring kids at Outdoor School, or leading initiatives at her high school’s Interact Club, Melissa’s passion for service shines through. Balancing two jobs while maintaining an outstanding GPA, she proves that hard work and compassion can go hand in hand. We’re proud to recognize her dedication to her community and excited to see what she’ll do next!

2025 Update from Melissa: “Since last year I have been adjusting to university life at the University of Calgary. I am currently studying biomedical science and working towards a Bachelor of Health Sciences.”
