“I really enjoyed this novel method of teaching language, combining gestures with new words helped accelerate my learning, the different in-class exercises or “games” made for an engaging learning environment. The repetition of words helped the lessons stick and speaking only French in class, with a few exceptions, made for an immersive experience. I was surprised how many new words I had learned after only a month of class. I am looking forward to learning French using this style of teaching in the future.” – Haley
“Kathryn’s teaching style is warm and encouraging, and she has a way of making everything clear and easy to follow. She creates a really supportive environment that makes learning French feel approachable, even when we’re tackling new or tricky words. Her class is perfect for anyone wanting to learn French, whether it’s your second or third language — it’s engaging, paced just right, and accessible for learners at any level. What really stood out to me was how she made the learning process feel simple and manageable, even when the language felt overwhelming at first, especially as a third language learner.” – Aziz
“What I enjoyed most about the class was the use of actions to communicate in French—it made learning easy and engaging, especially as a complete beginner with no prior knowledge. The interactive approach helped me understand and remember words better; for example, it took me four days to pronounce “désolé” correctly, but I remembered the action instantly and could relate to it right away. I would highly recommend this class, especially with Madame Kathryn, who is extremely supportive, helpful, and makes sure no one feels left out. Her teaching style is very effective—she has a deep understanding of French and uses simple, action-based methods that make it easier to express thoughts and learn naturally.” – Sami
“I have studied a few languages during the course of my life, 40 plus years, at a few different universities, and most had the same method for teaching: study, memorize, test, repeat. While this method worked for me at an academic level, it never really bridged the gap between oral language skills and written language skills. However, the method used for this class really helped me push through that missing gap – the use of hand gestures to reinforce memorization of written and oral was phenomenal. I was able to more easily transition to the use of French for speaking with the gestures, than I have been in the past. I found myself thinking more in French, and less in thinking in English before translating to French. For me this class and method helped accelerate my ability and willingness to try and speak in French because I found confidence in having the hand gestures to help me speak. I would, and will, take this class again in a heartbeat. Also, the teacher is great: helpful, energetic, fun and talented

About Mme Kathryn:
I didn’t fall in love with French because of worksheets or grammar drills — I fell in love with it because it connected me to people… Read more
I studied French and education at UBC and spent a year living and working in France, where I experienced firsthand what it feels like to actually live in a language.
That experience shaped how I teach: French should feel fun, expressive, and joyful. And most importantly, I want students to feel comfortable with trying and making mistakes (that’s how we learn best!)
I spent five years teaching French at University Hill Secondary, where I was trained in the Accelerative Integrated Method (AIM). It completely changed how I thought about language learning.
Part of what I love most about teaching is the playful, theatrical side of it. I’ve always loved improv and laughter, and that energy shows up in every class.
For me, language learning isn’t about perfection. It’s about connection, confidence, and joy. When I’m not teaching, you’ll usually find me exploring local trails with my dog Gus, playing endless games of tag with my boys, or (in rare, blissful moments) curled up with a novel and a café au lait.
